DreamKey: Sacred Seeing
As a child, I was guided by a quiet voice that taught me how to paint pictures in my mind that would make me feel good and help me cope with the paralyzing fear I was experiencing at night. Working with my guide and the images seeded something deep within me of the power of images to heal.
I remember lucid moments, billowing clouds transforming into endless shapes above me, and the wonder of a single snowflake appearing in a crystal-clear view, infinitely perfect in its design.
As children, being present and open is natural, but sadly, this way of being is quickly trained out of us. I refer to this method of communication and perception as the language of the soul. I’m excited to share my new tool, DreamKey, your first step into “seeing with the eyes of the heart.”
DreamKey begins with the ancient practice of Visio Divina, or “Divine Seeing,” a way of using images to commune with the divine presence in our lives. Visio Divina was adapted from the earlier monastic, devotional practice from the 6th century called Lectio Divina, or Divine Reading, that used scriptural reading to hear the voice of the divine. While the earlier practice used words, Visio Divina invites a divine connection through deep presence with images.
I first introduced this practice as a bridge to dreamwork. Like with our night dreams, when we sit with curiosity and openness, engaging with the images by entering them and letting them speak to us, rather than trying to define them, we come to new revelations about ourselves and our lives. This practice offers a beautiful way for people to engage with images, whether they remember their dreams or not. Dreaming is an ongoing experience that persists even when we’re awake. The imaginal world is accessible anytime; we only need to remember how and why it’s important.
Your DreamKey session can serve as either a starting point for deeper exploration or as a standalone tool for exploring the world of images.
This “sacred seeing” isn’t the work of the head or logical mind, though. It doesn’t follow a linear way of thinking. In fact, it’s the opposite of logical thinking. Visio Divina asks us to “see” with a different sense perception. To engage it, we must move from the rational, logical left-brain way of thinking to the more intuitive, creative, and feeling way of perceiving. This type of sensing belongs to the right brain and is how we interact with the Mundus Imaginalis, the imaginal world that is “a world that is ontologically as real as the world of the senses and the intellect,” according to Henry Corbin, friend and colleague of Carl Jung.
Working with this domain is the foundation of my work. Through dreams, visions, creative processes, and imaginal journeys, we come into direct contact with this ‘otherworld,’ where our ancestors dwell, psychic experiences happen, and visions occur, and where mystics and shamanic people have been traversing for centuries. The ancient practice of gazing at icons or images as doorways to this ‘otherworld’ is not new. Nowadays, people use various modern images, including art, photography, and nature, to create a deep presence and connection to their true nature.
Images become living portals, interfaces to glimpse the world beyond our physical existence. You cannot think or solve your way in. Access requires curiosity, openness, intuition, and feeling as you connect with the image as if it were alive, capable of perceiving you. This approach is perhaps what James Hillman was getting at when he suggests moving away from trying to interpret and analyze our dream images. “As soon as you define the snake, you lose the snake,” he said. His wise words resonate deeply.
The DreamKey is crucial now more than ever, as we are lured deeper and deeper into technology and the images the outer world wants us to see. Other people's dreams and imaginations constantly bombard us, overshadowing our own. With newer technologies coming at breakneck speeds, stealing our attention at every possible turn and damaging our psyche, our dreams and unique images are priceless.
Holding onto images that nourish us is vital.
We must guard our time and attention with the iron blade of discernment, blocking distractions that drain our creative imagination. The DreamKey is a step towards remembering this ancient way of perceiving. When we slow down and become present, something new, creative, and unexpected can emerge. Every moment is full of possibility, where information and new experiences emerge in real time. We need to listen deeply, surrendering to what wants to be seen, but this modern way of living disconnects us from feeling, making us miss our somatic cues and the divine presence waiting patiently for us to notice.
My work explores the somatic, intuitive, and creative ways of sensing and being, tuning into sacred feminine wisdom.
Engage in an ancient practice with new roots, reminding you to transcend the physical into the mystical otherworld where the divine spark of knowing is revealed.
